Ceramic extrusions for tubes, rods and complex geometries

Why extrusions? Luminex™ (Magnesium Oxide) - AluminasCustomised Materials Enquiry Form

Extrusions are suitable for any product with uniform cross sections, ranging from solid rods through to complex multi-hole tubes. However, product does not have to be circular across its section – any regular geometric shape or more abstract geometries are also equally achievable.

Morgan Advanced Ceramics, Stourport, UK, is a world leader in the design and manufacture of extruded ceramic components for a wide range of mechanical, electrical, electronic and specialist applications.

The company’s established range of advanced ceramic materials, including Magnesia and Alumina offer solutions for the majority of existing applications including cartridge heaters, thermocouples and medical implants. Alternatively, our ceramicists have proven experience in developing customised extrudable materials to meet the specific needs of your technology.

In comparison to other forming methods, extrusion tooling costs are extremely low – typically around 10% of an equivalent dry press tool. This allows for sample batch manufacture to take place on the same tool and process equipment used during full production, reducing the risk and time taken to progress from prototype to volume manufacture.

What does Morgan Advanced Ceramics offer?

  • Outside diameters up to 50mm can be accommodated - or at the other end of the spectrum - less than 0.5mm with inner diameters almost too small to see with the naked eye.
  • Three levels of material customisation to meet your needs:
    1. A range of standard materials, renowned for their consistency and quality. Available ‘off the shelf’.
    2. Customisation of our standard material range, tailored to meet your requirements for characteristics such as:
      • Porosity
      • Permeability
      • Strength
    3. A specially made material, developed and refined, for your unique application. Our experienced ceramicists have produced unique materials for components in industries as diverse as medical equipment or next generation power solutions.
  • Long term, stable, material supply; proven quality and an exceptional on-time delivery record
  • Thousands of standard dimension rods and tubes and the ability to meet any requested geometry (within the dimensional range above), with minimal tooling costs.

Extrusion Materials

Luminex™ - Magnesium Oxide (Magnesia)

Morgan Advanced Ceramics’ Luminex™ Magnesia is renowned throughout the industry for its quality and consistency. Extruded Magnesia (MgO) is used primarily in heat engineering applications such as cartridge heaters and thermocouples, due to its unique properties having both excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation at temperatures of up to 1200°C.

In most applications the extruded magnesia is slipped around heater cables and sheathed in metal tubes before being crushed to its ultimate size within the cable. In this state, the cable is able to be wound or bent into shape without loss of the ceramic’s insulation or conductivity properties.

Typical applications

  • Sheath and high wattage cartridge heaters
  • Metering instrumentation
  • High temperature cabling
  • Thermocouples

Stourport offers three grades of Luminex™ tailored to meet the needs of a range of applications:

Luminex™ 970
A minimum 96% pure magnesium oxide (typically 97%) used for a variety of electrical insulation qualifications in domestic and industrial environments.

Luminex™ 990
A 99% pure magnesium oxide for use in applications in which electrical properties need to be maintained at high temperatures, in particular high electrical resistance can be maintained up to 1100°C.

Luminex™ 993
An ultra pure magnesium oxide with a minimum purity of 99.3%, low water absorption properties, high volume resistance and minimal sulphur content, this grade is well suited to applications such as micro cartridge heaters and thermocouples.

Properties of Luminex™ magnesium oxide

  • Excellent electrical insulating properties at high temperatures
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Porosity may be tailored to customer’s requirements
  • Strength and crushability optimised to customer’s needs
  • Low neutron absorption
  • Uniform density

Aluminium Oxides (Aluminas)

Extruded aluminas offer a combination of good mechanical and electrical properties. Available in a range of purities from 96% to 99.7%, aluminas are well suited to a wide range of applications from resistors to specialist medical devices.

The material characteristics of aluminas allow for extremely small extrusions, highly complex geometries and excellent surface finishes. Additionally alumina, as a fully dense material, can be processed to further improve surface finish or to meet tighter dimensional tolerances.

Typical aluminas used in extrusions are:

Hilox™ 961 Alumina
A brown coloured 96% alumina, with exceptional wear properties, typically used for applications such as pump shafts.

Hilox™ 965 Alumina
A white, minimum 95% alumina, for applications requiring good surface finish as well as the excellent mechanical and electrical properties typical of aluminas.

TG12™
A 99.5% high purity alumina, excellent for the smallest extrusions or in applications in which exceptional surface finish is required.

Frequentite™

A magnesium silicate offering an economical solution for product needing good high temperature electrical resistance for components without a requirement for the high strength properties of alumina. Typically for use only in high volume applications.
